AMURT & AMURTEL JAPAN Relief Work Report for 23 March 2011

Today our small team increased in size because brother Karun from Utsunomia city joined us. He works as an engineer for Honda cars and since production won’t resume for at least four more months, he got permission from his boss to do relief work with us. This was the ideal opportunity to create two teams so that one could continue the cleaning work for the elderly, and the other explored other areas affected by the tsunami.

The first team was assigned to help Fujiko Shoji, a grandmother who was opening for the first time her house after 12 long days spent at the refugee center. She was crying when seeing the level of destruction caused by the tsunami to her home; even our volunteers were confused as to where to start, such was the mess. She described to us how she was in her backyard when the earthquake struck and she heard the tsunami-warning siren. Her very elderly mother couldn’t walk upstairs so she had to carry her on her back and she made it just on time to see the back wall of water with cars and what not else coming towards her house. She told us how a lady trying to run by car has the presence of mind to stop her car just next to a light pole and climbing it she managed to reach the roof of her home, while her car was swept away by the water. Such a last second escape from certain death!

It took many hours to clear the house and she couldn’t hold her tears when before leaving Dada Karunamaya felt the desire to sing for her Dada Vedaprajinanandaji’s song from Baba’s famous quote: You are never alone or helpless: the force that guides the stars guides you too. What a magic moment for her! She expressed that after today she won’t feel disheartened anymore and that she really wished all of us could return to visit once the house is properly clean.

The second team instead travelled to Shichigahama town, at about 6 km. from Tagajo where the first team was engaged in the cleaning work. This town was the frontline against the tsunami and we could see such devastation that we couldn’t stop our tears. So many homes had been torn from the ground, chewed by the fury of the tsunami and then spit anywhere. As usual the local authorities weren’t too keen to entertain our offer of help, but after some persistent attempts we managed to get the permission to approach directly the refugee centers in the area. We were quite happy because it seems we are the first NGO to get such trust.

We visited the first one and we found that all basic needs are now covered, including medical care and games for the children. We offered stretching exercises and yoga for adults and informal counseling and the manager, who is really a kind man, told us what we wanted to hear: “Your help is welcome!” So tomorrow we will split again into two teams and take care of about 400 people in two different centers. We are really excited about this development because we will be able to follow up the same people and once we find local volunteers to help with translation, we can expand our service to more refugee centers and win touch hearts with our loving care. It seems all we need to do is to make a tiny step in the right direction, and our goal will come running towards us! Dada Ganadevanand
